Summers are getting longer and winters are getting shorter. Have you ever questioned why? There’s something happening to our world that no one seems to worry about anymore; and frankly, it’s pissing me off.
First, let me introduce myself. My name’s Erica and I live in a small town in the Christmas tree capital of the world. As a child I loved to play outside; my cousins and I would run around all day in our bare feet and catch lightning bugs when it got dark. As we got older, we graduated from lightning bugs to salamanders that we found under rocks. Once we got bored with the tiny little lizards, we moved on and started to go on hikes through the woods. We would jump over rocks, run down hills, and balance on trees that fell over winding creeks.
But, as much fun as we had during the summer and fall; winter was always my favorite season. School would get canceled which meant it was snow fort time! My dad would plow our drive way and pile the snow high so that we could dig a tunnel through it.
Soon, though, we all grew up and with each passing year, the snow seemed to fade. The sparkling white blankets we once had turned into a couple of inches – if we were lucky. The ground would freeze just enough to kill the green grass but it still wasn’t cold enough to keep the snow from melting. The winter wonderland we had before is now a muddy mess and as I grew older and older, I demanded a reason for why!
Usually, when someone mentions Global Warming they brush it off and turn their head, because the media doesn’t report it, and even our newly elected President Donald Trump doesn’t believe that it’s a global threat.
“The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” – @realDonaldTrump
“Ice storm rolls from Texas to Tennessee – I’m in Los Angeles and it’s freezing. Global warming is a total, and very expensive, hoax!” – @realDonaldTrump
“We should be focused on magnificently clean and healthy air and not distracted by the expensive hoax that is global warming!” @realDonaldTrump
Well with all due respect Mr. Trump, you’re wrong. And here is a list of just 5 reasons why global warming is real.
1. Rising Sea Levels
Global sea levels rose 6.7 inches in the last century. If that doesn’t give you the chills-get this- the rate in the last decade alone is nearly double that.
With the sea levels rising at such a rapid pace, would you want to live here?
2. Warming Oceans
Between 1993-2008 the NOAA noted a 32.324F (0.18C) rise in temperature.
Doesn’t seem like a lot does it? Well, get this:
“…that little bit of temperature increase represents a lot of heat…the total heat added to the oceans during that 15-year period is equivalent to the energy that would be released by exploding about 2 billion Hiroshima-scale atomic bombs” – John Lyman, NOAA
2.5 Global Temperature Rise
There are many reasons why our planet may seem like it’s going to erupt into flames; but here are a couple that can be fixed!
- Deforestation (I’ll go into detail about this monstrosity in another blog)
- Over Population
- Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon Dioxide
3. Shrinking Ice Sheets
“In the worst case, these Arctic outflow surges can significantly change the densities of marine surface waters…what happens then is hard to predict” – Dr de Steur
4. Extreme Events
Natural disasters created 22 million refugees in 2013-three times as many people as war.
The risk of an extreme weather event causing unpredictable, large-scale displacements highlights the need for greater investment in disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. – climatechangenews.com
5. Glacial Retreat
The continued glacial retreat will have a crap ton of different impacts – the major one being a large rise in sea levels.
So you see, all of these horrible things I’ve listed above are not only real but each one has an impact on another. It’s a domino effect that will turn into an avalanche if we don’t all try our hardest to prevent it.
This is real. This is scary as hell. This is happening RIGHT NOW!
But there are actions that can be taken to lessen our footprint and slow down global warming! For now, lets worry about ‘making America great again’ after we find a solution to the bigger picture.
